Every employee should know how to safely operate a fire extinguisher. Training gives employees the ability to make safe decisions and act quickly in the event of a fire, allowing them to determine when it is safe to fight a fire and when the situation has become too dangerous to remain in the area, and they must make their exit. Fire Classes

Employees are educated on the various fires:

  • Class B fires (flammable liquids)
  • Class C fires (flammable gases)
  • Electrical fires
  • Other fires and special hazards (if applicable)

Knowledge of fire classes enables employees to select the appropriate fire extinguisher. In addition, knowledge of fire classes prevents employees from using the inappropriate fire extinguisher that may worsen the fire.

Extinguishers and their Types

Employees are educated on the extinguishers present in the workplace. They include;

  • CO2 extinguishers that are used for electrical fires.
  • Dry chemical ABE powder extinguishers that are used for general fires.
  • Wet chemical extinguishers that are used for cooking oil fires.
  • Water and foam extinguishers that are used for Class A fires.

Knowing each type of fire extinguisher enables employees to act safely and efficiently.

PASS Method

Employees are taught the PASS method, which is used to operate extinguishers correctly.

  • Pull
  • Aim
  • Squeeze
  • Sweep

Employees are left to practice the PASS method during training. This is to instill the procedure to be used in fire emergencies.

Safe Response Limits

Staff are taught when to try putting the fire out and when to just evacuate the area. Trying to put a fire out when you can’t do so can be quite dangerous. The safety of the staff is prioritised in the training. Staff are trained to keep a clear escape route and not put themselves in danger.
